Effects on the Impulse Discharge of the Vagal Efferent Fiber by the Somatic Afferent Stimulation

Abstract
Experiments were performed on adult cats (2.5-4.0kg) anaesthetized with pentobarbital (sodium (Nembutal 50mg/kg I.M.). After cutting the vagus nerve at the level of the cervical vertebrae, a burst of action potentials of single fiber which project to the lung and oscilates with respiratory cyele, were recorded on the central end of the vagus nerve. The respiratory neurous were classifed according to discharge pattern, To elucidate the influences of the somatic nerve stimuli to the vagus nerve discharge which innervate respiratory effectors of the lung, pressure pain and cold stimuli were given to the aura pinna. The following results were obtained.
Type I: Impluse discharge of these fibers appeared only in inspiratory period continuosly and its mean impulse discharge was 59 impulses/3.4 sec. (17 impulses/sec.). When the pressure pain was given to the aura pinna, impulse discharge of this type was increased to 76 impulses/3.8 sec. (21 impulses/sec.) and inspiratory period was also increased. When the cold stimulation was given to the aura pinna, impulse discharge was markedly decreased to 34 impulses/4 sec. (8 impulses/sec.).
Type II: Impulse discharge of these fibers appeared only, in inspiratory period with abrupt start and its mean impulse discharge was 40 impulses/3 sec.(13 impulses/sec.). When. the pressure pain was given to the aura pinna, impulse discharge of this type was ddecreased to 16 impulses/1.6 sec. (10 impulses/sec.) and inspiratory period was decreased. When the cold stimulation was given to the aura pinna, impulse discharge was increased to 50 impulses/3.2 sec (15 impulses/sec.).
Type III: Impulse discharge of these fibers appeared only in inspiratory period with peak frequency at mid of phase and its mean impulse discharge was 62 impulses/1.7sec. (36 impulses/sec.). When the pressure pain was given to the aura pinna, impulse discharge of this type was increased to 71 impulses/2 sec. but impulse discharge per second (35 impulses/sec.) was almost same, this results was caused by increased inspiratory period. When the cold stimulation was given to the aura pinna, impulse discharge was decreasedto 58 impulses/2 sec. (29 impulses/sec.).
Type IV: Impulse discharge of these fibers appeared in inspiratory and expiratory period with contenuous pattern and its mean impulse discharge was 83 impulse/3.2 sec. (25 impIses/sec.). When the pressure pain was given to the aura pinna, impulse discharge of this
type was increased to 94 impulses/3.8 sec. (25 impulses/sec.) but impulse discharge per second was equal, this result may be caused conseqently by the increased inspiratory period. When the cold stimulation was given to the aura pinna, impulse discharge was decreased to 69 impulses/4sec. (11 impulses/sec.) also impulse discharge per second was decreased comparatively, for this result was caused by increased inspiratory period.
